Lives behind the findings
Fifteen analytic themes were developed across 2,933 interview response units using Guided AI Thematic Analysis (GAITA). Financial Strain is shown first; select any other theme to display its focused story, four participant quotations, connected subthemes, survey findings, and related audio below the grid.
Interactive coding structure
Select any theme to display its public-facing story, four borrower quotations, connected subthemes, related survey outcomes, and available audio below the theme grid.
Showing 15 of 15 analytic themes
How to interpret the counts: Excerpt totals describe coding density within the interview corpus, and borrower reach shows how many of the 67 participants had the theme present. Neither measure estimates prevalence in the broader borrower population.

For some borrowers, debt becomes concrete at the grocery store: meals are skipped, food is charged to credit, and shopping is reduced item by item to stretch the household budget.
Borrower voices
“Over the last year, I lived off credit cards. I would skip meals to bridge the gap. Now I’m living with someone else, so it isn’t as much of an issue.”
“I shop online so I can monitor how much I’m spending. Do I really need this cut of meat, this extra fruit, this extra snack?”
“We were using a credit card at the grocery store and not paying it off in full. After my salary increased, we got out from underneath that.”
“I can afford the $300 payment, but it’s still $300. Groceries are $500 or $600 a month, and daycare is more than rent.”
Participant names are pseudonyms. Quotations are lightly edited to remove verbal fillers, false starts, and repetition, and may be shortened for clarity without changing meaning.
These are conceptual connections across the study, not respondent-level statistical linkages.
